At Waterside Academy, we want our pupils to achieve academic excellence, self belief and have intellectual curiosity.

We want our pupils to leave Waterside Academy having made exceptional academic progress and achieved great qualifications.  In addition, we also want our pupils to leave as well-rounded individuals.

Three ways we aim to achieve this is by encouraging our pupils to engage with the Hackney Value of the Week, participate in the Master Mission and attend School Clubs.

Hackney Value of the Week

There are 10 Hackney Values which all of our school community try to embody every day, that means all staff and all students.  Each week we focus on one of the values in assembly time, during PSHE lessons and during our own reflection time. Students who embody the values are recognised and rewarded.

Master Mission

The Master Mission is a set of tasks that have been designed specifically to encourage our students to become independent, self-reliant and dedicated learners, who contribute to their school and our wider community.  The Master Mission allows our students to take part in enrichment activities which enable students to build cultural capital. There are currently three levels of Master Mission, which are Bronze, Silver and Gold. 

As part of each level of the Master Mission, students need to complete a number of tasks that fall into four sections:

  • Opportunities to extend their learning, in their own time demonstrating their commitment to their learning. The extension tasks that need to be completed tie in with the school’s HNS Values programme.
  • Encouraging students to visit places of interest such as museums, art galleries and landmarks. Students are also expected to participate in at least one of the many differing school clubs on offer at lunchtimes and after school. 
  • Opportunities for students to serve the school and community by completing activities that will benefit the whole school and wider community, through volunteering and fundraising activities. Volunteering Opportunities will be emailed out regularly to students and advertised in school, with students being invited to apply for these volunteering opportunities. 
  • Encouraging students to complete an activity that challenges them to develop physically, culturally and socially. 

As students complete each of the Master Mission tasks (for the differing levels), they will need to upload evidence to the DPR to demonstrate their completion of the required tasks.  Student Managers will judge the evidence using DPR. All students who have completed the Bronze Master Mission successfully will receive a Bronze Master Mission Award badge and certificate and be invited to complete the Silver Master Mission Award, before moving on to the highest level – the Gold Master Mission Award.
